I think it's because when you're broke you have an unmatched freedom and when you get a little cash in your pocket you become more reliant on it--and then it's never enough. I admire the hard work you put into that one year for your kid. I went through 3 years of really bad times (way before my daughter and wife) living on sometimes $8-10 a week. Those days still haunt me and I always feel guilty even buying a Smoothie or whatever knowing how much I could do with that. Wow. I admire the hard work you put into that one year for your kid.
