Hi Ho, Hi Ho

It is off to the city that doesn’t sleep for me today, so instead I am going to point you over in the direction of Creative-Type Dad that has an excellent post up (and just in time for Halloween Costume Shopping), where he points out When The Kids’ Halloween Costume Cost More Than My First Car, Something Is Seriously Wrong. Go on over and check it out, and chime in. How much do YOU spend on your kids Halloween Costumes?

Under $10. Mostly homemade. I’m no seamstress (in fact, I can’t sew at all) and have very little time. But we use our imagination, and I’m wicked with a glue gun.

Tshirt + silk leaves + some Spanish moss and a plastic spider or two = a pile of leaves (and 1st prize in a costume contest). Hey, every pile of leaves has a spider or two!

Old, yellowed sheets + old thermal underwear + 2 minutes of acting lessons = a GREAT mummy (and 1st prize in a costume contest).

A black hooded sweat jacket + some fishing line + some fake fur in white and black (add in some very incredibly minimal sewing) = a skunk whose tail swishes when kidlin walks…and she was potty trained, so she didn’t smell like a skunk. LOL!

Purple iridescent fabric + huge pocorn bowl upside down on head + one small circle of foam (to fit inside bowl upside down on head – could’ve used an old bike helmet instead I guess) gray t-shirt and sweatpants = a jellyfish (and 1st prize in costume contest)

Salvation Army little boy’s suit two sizes too small + green t-shirt + black fake “hair” + cardboard box + two foam neck bolts fashioned from foam padding laying around the house = Frankenstein complete with protruding brow and neck bolts….and – you guessed it – 1st place in a costume contest.

See, I’m a whiz with a hot glue gun. We’re all very imaginative. And the kids really get into it. They’re not girly girls, so the princess thing never was an option. Unless, of course, it was a princess zombie or the princess that the dragon attacked, in which case, I would be commissioned for the job immediately.

Pooh. None of my plus signs showed up! Oh well, you’ll figure it out. (All items were “added” together to equal a really cool costume.) Stupid coding.

 Not my favorite time of year. Weather-wise, it’s still not even ‘cool’ here in Texas, so I buy short-sleeved costumes, only to be assured a cold-front on the evening of the trick-or-treating…

I tell family from Chicago: if you don’t like the weather here, just wait five minutes – it will CHANGE!

Hugs to you, J! Miss ya

Got something to say?
