OK, I have been reading quite a few parent type blogs for quite some time now, and I read blogs with kids of all ages. So I have to know, why haven’t any of you told me about the Junie B. series of books? We are currently reading Junie B., First Grader: Toothless Wonder and it has taken LatteGirl’s craving for reading to new heights. Seriously.
I mean she once she got over her initial fear of reading (which was more about fear of not reading “perfectly”) she has enjoyed reading, even things that are a bit tough for her. But she would tire with a story easily. She is just eating this up, and I have to force her to put it down to go to sleep.
These are great little “chapter books” that have far more story and detail than the basic children’s books we have had up until now, but not so hard or complicated as to confuse or cause a loss of interest. I see a lot more Junie B in our future.
So, why the big secret? I’m sure some of you have run across these books before, right? If not, what is (or did) you child read once they started to get beyond the single chapter books?

We don’t allow Junie B. books in our house because of her smart mouth. Yeh, I know that’s making you laugh considering my potty mouth and fondness for innuendo. We do Bailey School Kids and Magic Treehouse books.
I think Clare will be reading Junie B. in school soon. Her class
is going to a Junie B. performance on stage in May. I didn’t know
about the “smart mouth” though.
That is interesting Biscuit. While I have noticed in the one we are reading that Junie B. does not accept what anybody says at face value (including her parents), from what I read (or more correctly what has been read to me) so far, I wouldn’t really classify her as a “smart mouth.”
I guess I will have to keep an eye on that.
I both love and dislike Junie B. books. The improper “speak” is hard for the kids to read. We do talk about how people speak differently, but there is a proper way to speak, blah, blah, blah… But still. So many books, so little time. I’m hoping Bug slides right past Junie B and goes for the Magic Treehouse. Right now we’re reading Pippi. Wheee! (I forgot she was strong!)
Of course now Bug says she can lift up her bed (and everything/one else that crosses her path).
Remember Ramona the Pest? It’s been YEARS since I read those. Might be a good time to start.
