Oh My Dog

Busy little beaver I am today (eventually I am going to have to get some work done in the office… but it is currently lunch time so…).

We are looking to get a second dog, TheWife and LatteGirl have been harping on me for quite some time, but we weren’t able to agree on much.  I finally won out after sending them over to  go visit Jenn’s dog Roxy at One Foxy Hound.  One look at that dog, and they came to my side of the fence, and now we are looking to adopt a new Basset Hound.

Somebody warned about this sometime back (if it was you please speak up), how tough it was to adopt a dog nowadays.  It sounded odd to me, because we have adopted dogs before, but never had that big a problem with it.

Apparently times have changed.  When I inquired at Tri-State Basset Hound rescue, I was greeted with a three page application to fill out.  That followed with a 45 minute interview that I just completed, and now they will decide if they will let me adopt one of their dogs, “if they find one that is suitable to my household.”  I won’t even go into the fact that the adoption will run $200.  I understand they need to make money to keep these shelters and rescue places going, but at $200, people are going to instead opt to go to a breeder or Pet Store and buy “new” since the cost is not going to be much different.

You know, if they had as stringent controls on adopting or fostering children in this country as they do to adopt a homeless dog, children would be much better off.

Oh, I agree – having gone to a shelter after being DENIED by a so-called “rescue” – adopting children must be way easier; good luck!

By the way, if I haven’t already told you – because hubs and I have been down with the stomach flu – got the cookies…way good…all gone now!

Trust me the rescue does not even come close to making any money off $200.00 for each dog. I do think the process is a bit much but in a lot of cases nessary.
I, me who loves my Basset more then I love myself, was denied by my first breeder. I was hurt because I knew I would give the dog a good loving home. But she turned me down because I work all day. Yet her pups were $900.00, who could pay that if they didn’t work?

Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to write a book, i’ll stop now!

Amen. I guess the one thing you get for your money is the assurance that the dog you are adopting is most likely not ill or has not horrible genetic defect. Pet stores are the worst places to get pets from.

It is not about the cost, or even the “value.” I do not mind donating to shelters, I donate to several every year.

But it is a tough sell to Joe Six-Pack that he should go to a shelter to get a dog, when he can take Little Joe Jr. to the pet store and get that brand new puppy for not that much more money.

That may have been me when we were looking to adopt a new cat. Anyway good luck! Love the new look here!

I understand the money goes to a good cause and helps animals but it feels a bit steep. It’s great that the check up thoroughly on the owners, it seems like they are almost more strict with animals than with kids though……
